Late Payments: It can be difficult when you have several different lines of credit to keep track of the due dates for all of them, but it can have a huge effect on your credit score. You only need one or two late payments per year to drop your credit score substantially, and it takes a lot of work to get that score back. Try signing up for automatic bill payments, or find a way to remind yourself. This is the easiest cause to remedy, and the best way to keep your score as high as possible.

Credit to Debt Ratio: If you have a lot of debt and not a lot of available credit left, your score will drop because of it. A poor available credit to debt ratio can be avoided by using less than half of your available credit. Account Age: It may be surprising to most people that the age of your credit accounts, loans, and other accounts can help determine your credit score. A well-established account of several years old is a good indicator of your credit history. Older accounts have more details of your credit usage, payment history, and are more accurate. An account that is young doesn't have enough information to tell future lenders about your credit habits.

Total Debt: If you already have several credit card debts and loans, you might have accumulated more debt than you realize. Unless you are a high wage earner and you can pay off your current debt quickly, lenders and other financial institutions might not be willing to add to your debts.

Bankruptcy: Of all the things on this list, bankruptcy is the worst. A bankruptcy stays on your credit score for years and will have the biggest influence on your credit score. Declaring bankruptcy stops you from being able to take out any new lines of credit for at least the first few years, and even after that it can influence all lending decisions. In order to keep yourself from taking a huge hit on your credit score, avoid bankruptcy at all costs.
